It only seems to us that, in today’s reality, separate countries exist. The entire current world is one huge State of Fear. After all, only by relying on fear can rulers keep their own peoples obedient. And when in 1989 the Berlin Wall fell, and soon after the Evil Empire collapsed, new dangers for the free world immediately appeared—such as Islamic terrorism and global warming threatening with the Apocalypse.

Environmental pollution is a boring, because obvious, fact. Global warming and unpleasant weather events caused by the greenhouse effect, melting glaciers and the sea level rising—media have been talking about this for many years. These negative phenomena are fought by ecological organizations; and some of them use the most radical methods. That’s how it should be. That is, the warming itself is a fact that doesn’t raise doubts, but the claim that it’s caused by people rather than natural causes— that’s a big question! Many environmental organizations, Crichton believes, are speculating on this topic and trying to get funding for, in essence, pointless activities. And when it comes to serious investments, well—jokes aside! To stay afloat, some people are ready to do literally anything. Especially since the achievements of modern science make it possible to create tsunamis, direct lightning, and commit other nasty horrors that can be interpreted as results of global warming…
