Description
Machiavelli’s best-known work is the treatise “The Prince,” originally published in Russia under the titles “The Prince” and “Ruler.”

Machiavelli developed the doctrine of a steadily secular state, free from church morality. He believed that in the struggle to strengthen the state, any means are permissible: violence, deception, betrayal. The term “Machiavellianism,” which appeared later, came to denote a policy that disregards the laws of moral conduct.
Machiavelli wrote: “One must understand that the prince, especially a new one, cannot do everything that people consider good, since to preserve the state he is often forced to go against his word, against mercy, goodness, and piety.”

In 1559 the Catholic Church included Machiavelli’s work in the list of banned books.
