Description
“The Prince” is the most famous treatise by the Italian thinker Niccolò Machiavelli (Italian: Niccolo di Bernardo dei Machiavelli; 1469–1527).

The book describes in detail the personality, worldview, aspirations, and qualities that a ruler must possess. It also lays out methods and ways of seizing and maintaining tyrannical power. In Machiavelli’s view, lying, violence, and betrayal are the basic principles of statecraft.

An effective ruler must separate moral norms from politics and instill in his subjects not love, but fear. The actions that private morality considers bad are beneficial for the flourishing of the state—they deserve respect and praise. Detailed and timeless descriptions of effective governance make Machiavelli’s book a desktop reference for modern politicians, managers, and psychologists.

The treatise “The Prince” was included by the Catholic Church in the list of forbidden books.
