Here’s an anti-utopia by Stephenie Meyer. The plot of the book is quite popular and not new: Earth is in danger; unknown aliens take it over. The truth is, they do it very subtly—by taking over people’s bodies, pushing out their soul and mind. The whole world might have perished if only one girl, Melanie, hadn’t resisted what was happening. The alien being fails to force Melanie’s soul to leave her body. And from that moment, Earth’s people gain hope for liberation…
This book is more than just a fantastic story of incredible events. It has a fairly deep meaning. Alien beings change human society. There is less evil in the world, and their takeover is not as bloodthirsty as one might expect. Society becomes “ideal,” but it is no longer human society.
The Wanderer is one of the main characters. She is the one trying to take over Melanie’s body in order to control it. There is plenty to think about here. Do all our feelings come from within ourselves? Do we make decisions ourselves? Are we truly the owners of our bodies?
