In the novel “City and the Stars,” Clarke shows us a future that will come billions of years from now. Humanity has mastered the Galaxy and learned to live carefreely.
But the question is: is there some price for this immortality and carefreeness?
Diaspar is the city where its inhabitants are protected from the harsh conditions of the dying Earth; they are immortal and do not think about the past or the future. Lys is a valley, also protected from dangers, home to other people who—unlike Diaspar’s residents—remained mortal and preserved their human feelings.
Alvin will have to attempt to unite two completely different cultures.
