A Proud Heart

This is the story of a young woman, Susan Gaylord, an aspiring and talented sculptor, who is trying to find a balance between personal ambitions and public expectations. Unlike many women living in America at the beginning of the last century, Susan does not want to be content with only the role of a homemaker; she wants to build a career while still being a good wife and a loving mother. Will the heroine be able to defend her right to be herself?

In the novel "Proud Heart," autobiographical motifs can be traced; it is believed that the main character is in many ways an alter ego of Pearl Buck, through which she expresses her own reflections on women’s rights.
