As sad as it sounds, the most outstanding politicians of the 20th century were ruthlessly removed from political life as soon as it became clear that society no longer needed them. That was the fate of Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle, Margaret Thatcher and Mikhail Gorbachev. Despite the enormous difference in their backgrounds, their fates are strikingly similar. These politicians began their political careers to applause and ended almost under curses. Abroad they were admired more than at home.
Gorbachev is a tragic and outstanding figure. An honest man and a gifted politician who, when making decisions, didn’t put his own political survival first. If he had been thinking about himself, he could have changed course at any moment and used force. And even to this day, he would still be the General Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee.
