Description
The novel by Chabua Amiredjibi, a classic of Georgian literature and the author of the grand historical canvas “Date Tutashkhia,” can be called “a history made of many stories.” Once a political prisoner, spending half his life in camps, for the sixth time he escapes from places that are not so far away. Who is he—Go’ra Mborgali (Egor the Idler), who has carried that nickname since childhood: a hero or a victim? Why does this person—sincere and noble—so constantly run up against the reality surrounding him? Go’ra’s path through the taiga is long… His memories are long, about bourgeois Georgia, about the patriotic anti-Bolshevik resistance society “White George,” about Stalin’s camps, about the uprising of political prisoners in Karaganda… The novel’s gallery of characters is also long: criminals, prostitutes, guards—“the motley scum of the century”…
