This book contains stories whose material came from my observations and individual cases from my many years of work as an investigator.
Different people go through these stories. Their fates unfold in different ways. But first and foremost, I wanted to tell about those who, despite everything—often risking their own lives, day and night stand guard over public order: they prevent or uncover crimes, help people who took the wrong step find the right path again, and restore the good name of a Soviet person.
In some stories (“Where Did Makarov Disappear,” “Shells in the Ashes,” “Stepan Shmyga’s Career,” “Dipsoman,” “Thirty Pages of a Diary”), the authentic surnames of police officers and investigators are preserved.
