The novel “The General and His Army” was awarded the Booker Prize in 1995, and in 2001 it was recognized as the best novel of the decade. The author of this work is Georgy Nikolaevich Vladimov, known as a writer and human-rights advocate. In the book, he brings together the fates of three generals—Guderian, Vlasov, and the fictional Kobriso—while also portraying a combination of personal and historical, valor and betrayal, victory and defeat. In 2001, the novel was recognized as the best Booker novel of the decade and received the Andrei Sakharov prize “For Civil Courage of the Writer.”
