Description
An autobiographical novella, “Down and Out in Paris and London,” first published in 1933, tells of the streets and of those who have no street—that streetless existence is the only home. From childhood, Eric Arthur Blair (the real name of George Orwell) dreamed of becoming a writer. After serving in Burma, he returned to London and then went to Paris. In Britain, the writer wandered as a vagrant; in France, he washed dishes in Parisian restaurants. The book describes the experience of a life in poverty and raises problems of people who have sunk to the very bottom of the social ladder—people who don’t even have the faintest hope of returning to normal life.
