The historical novel “Mrs. Fru Maria Grubbe” (1876) is Jacobsen’s central work. Threads run from it to lyric poetry and early novellas. The novel takes place in the second half of the 17th century. Throughout all of Denmark’s life in those years, the consequences of the conflict with Sweden were reflected: Sweden’s aggressive policy ended in the military defeat of Charles XII.
Maria Grubbe is a real historical figure, the daughter of the statesman and nobleman Erik Grubbe. She married Ulrik Frederik Gyldenløve, Count Laurvig, the illegitimate son of the King of Denmark, Frederick III. She lived a very frivolous life by the standards of the time, for which she was deprived of her inheritance.
Maria’s misfortunes are drawn against the colorful everyday life of the era and unfold as a result of the impact of real-world circumstances.
