This ship was named in honor of the daughter of Zeus, Athena Pallada, the goddess of war and victory; later it became the ship of Pavel Nakhimov. The ship was created for great discoveries. In 1852, “Pallada” left Kronstadt and sailed across the Atlantic, the Indian, and the Pacific Oceans to the lands of Japan.
An important diplomatic mission was entrusted to Admiral Putyatin; at the same time, the Russian expedition throughout the entire voyage of the “Pallada” was engaged in studying seas and oceans, carrying out charting, and describing bays and coastlines. The secretary of this expedition was Ivan Goncharov, who described their journey in a cycle of essays titled “Frigate ‘Pallada.’”
