Aaron's Rod

Lawrence began writing “The Flute of Aaron” in early 1918, but abandoned the work after the first eleven chapters. The book was completed only three years later. Written immediately after World War I, the novel calls into question many of the widely accepted social and political institutions of that time.

Its main character, Aaron the flutist, flees England for Italy, trying to understand the nature of the political and religious ideologies that shaped Western civilization and to find his place in life.
