Aaron's Rod

Lawrence began writing “Aaron’s Flute” at the beginning of 1918, but gave up after the first eleven chapters. The book was completed only three years later. Written right after World War I, the novel calls into question many of the era’s widely accepted social and political institutions. The main character, the flutist Aaron, flees from England to Italy, trying to understand the nature of the political and religious ideologies that formed Western civilization and to find his place in life.
