Philosophers don’t always teach good. There were plenty of philosophers who wrote about passionate enjoyment and black despair. They didn’t systematize moral lessons; instead, they constantly provoked readers, knocking them off balance. They didn’t strive for purity of the philosophical genre—on the contrary, they let any ghosts, fears, and nightmares into philosophy. Terror and despair, an irresistible desire, and calculated egoism—pretending and lust, betrayal and the exciting underside of our life—this is what these philosophical writings are about. These philosophers boldly show us ideas and intentions we’re ashamed of and try to hide. We are like an open book to them—and they are our most vicious teachers!
