Description

A book by Russian philosopher and professor at the University of London, A. M. Pyatigorsky, is a synthesis of a philosophical treatise and works of fiction. The main character of the novella—N. R. Ardạtovskij (a real person, as are other characters and events)—is a philosopher in spirit and a businessman by profession.

The novella traces three chronological and topographical cross-sections: a Moscow backstreet and conversations taking place against the anxious atmosphere of the 1930s; discussions among the grown-up heroes in the “smoking room” of the Lenin Library in the late 1940s; and finally, the first meetings of those who had been familiar to each other since childhood, by correspondence, between the author and N. R. Ardạtovskij in London in the late 1970s.

Believing that the domain of real philosophical thought is consciousness rather than everyday life (the domain of non-consciousness), the heroes each, in their own way, address the problem of “philosophize or live?”
