“The Violet Prater,” by contrast, is a hilarious odyssey of a young writer through the world of the “golden age” of 1930s cinema—its “glamour and poverty,” backstage intrigues and professional ambitions, ridiculous scripts, real and invented schemes by competitors, and everything else that usually slips out of the spotlight.
