The legend of Faust and Goethe’s "Faust" is the best-known work of fiction created on the basis of the popular medieval book "The Story of Doctor Johann Faust" and occupies a special place in the history of mankind.
The hero of the tragedy "Faust" is a historical figure: he lived in the 16th century, was reputed to be a magician and a practitioner of black arts, and, rejecting contemporary science and religion, sold his soul to the devil. Legends grew around Doctor Faust; he was a character in theatrical performances, and many authors turned to his image in their books. But under Goethe’s pen, the Faust drama devoted to the eternal theme of understanding life became a pinnacle of world literature.
