The last year of the 19th century. A wave of tragic deaths sweeps across Moscow. Everyone who is killed turns out to be a member of the secret society “Keepers of Truth.” Hermann Ignatyevich Radetsky—formerly the chief cook of one of the best restaurants in the city and now a state councillor—becomes a witness to another murder. The crime occurs in the English Club in the presence of a small circle of people. Radetsky believes all the murders are connected to a folio of immense significance—hard to overestimate. But most importantly, Hermann Ignatyevich’s own life is now in danger too. The investigator Kurekin will have to solve the riddle and find out whether the murders are tied to the secret society, the folio, and who stands behind them.
