Fantômas is a fictional character, a brilliant criminal who hides his face; one of the most famous negative characters in French literature and cinema. Fantômas was created by French writers Marcel Allain and Pierre Souvestre in 1911. Fantômas appears in 32 novels written by Allain and Souvestre together, and in 11 novels written by Allain after the co-author’s death.
In the novels by Allain and Souvestre, Fantômas is a sociopath and a sadist who takes pleasure in killing his victims. He is ruthless and merciless to everyone, including his own children. Fantômas is a master of disguise: he commits his crimes under the guise of another person, often one whom he has already killed. To carry out his crimes, Fantômas likes to use various eccentric means—rats infected with the plague, giant snakes, rooms filled with sand.
Besides the novels by French writers, Fantômas appears in several films and television movies, as well as in comics.
