England, the 17th century. The noblewoman Fleetwood Shuttleworth is pregnant again—for the fourth time after three losses. She desperately longs to give her husband an heir, but by chance she discovers a letter hidden away by him: the doctor warns that, due to Fleetwood’s fragile health, childbirth may prove fatal for her.
Seeing no other way, the expectant mother turns to young village midwife Alice Gray. Alice promises to do everything possible so that Fleetwood can give birth to a living, strong child, and between the two women—separated by their background and position—trust gradually grows into genuine friendship.
Meanwhile, in Lancaster, the king’s wishes fuel a growing hunt for witches—bringing the notorious Pendle trials closer. Alice comes under suspicion as well, and then Fleetwood decides that, whatever it takes, she will protect her friend, even if doing so means challenging fear, prejudice, and authority.
