Germans are born hard workers. They are punctual, disciplined, and organized. For every occasion they have rules and instructions. “Order above all” is the Germans’ life credo passed down from generation to generation, and Kant’s categorical imperative was devised specifically to prevent world chaos. But the drive for perfection exhausts. So it’s no surprise that Germans are more susceptible to stress than anyone. They treat health just as thoroughly and seriously as everything else—they watch their diet and won’t buy mineral water without the label indicating reduced carbon dioxide content. At the same time, Germans firmly take first place in Europe for pork consumption, and the scale of Oktoberfest celebrations confirms the saying that “man doesn’t live by bread alone, but also by beer and sausages.”
