For the first time, this edition publishes the manuscript of Fyodor Vasilyevich Chelnokov (1866–1925)—an inheriting industrialist and Honorary Citizen of Moscow—written by him in exile in 1919–1925. The first part, “Balkan Notebooks,” is devoted to the tragic events of 1919: the Red Army’s advance on Crimea leads to the “Crimean evacuation”—a large-scale exodus of civilians, units of the White Army, and the Entente’s allies.

Together with his brother Mikhail Vasilyevich Chelnokov—former Moscow city head and one of the leaders of the Constitutional Democratic (Cadet) Party—along with a large group of well-known representatives of the nobility and the bourgeoisie, the author leaves Russia on a British ship and ends up in Serbia, newly restored as an independent state. As part of the Russian delegation, the Chelnokov brothers visit Bosnia and Herzegovina. Traveling through Bulgaria, devastated by the First World War, Chelnokov returns to Yalta—only to soon say goodbye to the Motherland forever; this is what the second part of the manuscript, “Berlin Notebooks,” describes.
