Description
This collection of poems includes both well-known works and archival discoveries published for the first time.

The complete collection of Vladimir Nabokov’s poems (1899–1977) was assembled from both widely known works and pieces published for the first time, written in Europe and America between 1918 and 1947. Recently deciphered and newly found in the author’s archives, the poems—among them “The Legend of the Moon” (1920), “Electricity” (1920), “On the North, the Wild” (1920), “Olympicum” (1921)—significantly expand the Russian part of his bilingual poetic legacy and reveal unknown aspects of his creative development. In the poetry of the famous author of “Lolita” and “Ada,” the origins and prerequisites of the distinctiveness of his prose can be found: delicate psychological depth, vivid visual quality of descriptions, precise observations, a special “mirror-like” quality of style, and a blend of invention with autobiographical elements.

For the first time, the poems “Two” (1919), “The Legend of the Moon,” “Electricity,” and “On the North, the Wild” are published; the text of Nabokov’s most significant early poem, “A Sunny Dream” (1923), is newly checked against the manuscript.

An appendix publishes another recent archival find, “A Superman’s Lament” (1942)—a unique Nabokov interpretation of the image of a hero from American comics. The edition includes commentary and illustrative material.
