Description
The Book of Ecclesiastes is one of the latest parts of the Old Testament.

The book surprised not only with its poetic power, but also with the fact that it contains deep pessimism that sharply contrasts with the content of the other books of the Bible. The question has often been raised: why did the compilers of the Bible include in it this melancholy poem about “vanity,” meaning the fruitlessness and evanescence of all human deeds? Many interpreters believe that Ecclesiastes was included in the collection of sacred writings as a warning, as a dialectical moment in the development of the entire biblical worldview. Originally, this worldview saw earthly well-being as a sign of divine blessing. In this way, the value of wealth, success, and continuing one’s line in children, etc., was almost absolutized. But at some point it was discovered that these values are by no means absolute. It became necessary to search for another spiritual meaning of human existence. And in the context of the whole Bible, Ecclesiastes marks the boundary milestone from which these searches began. It preserves both worldly wisdom and the fruits of reflection, and the experience of a person who has seen and experienced much; but over everything there is one mood and one thought: “all is vanity.”
