The book examines the role of the state in the modern world. Global upheavals and geopolitical shifts, climate change, rapid technological development, demographic shifts, limited resources, and increasingly diverse demands and expectations of citizens are only some of the driving forces behind public transformations that affect how governments operate. Governments in different countries are changing their approaches to governing, providing services, and interacting with citizens, business circles, and the third sector, but so far they have not been able to develop optimal response practices to these challenges. In the book “Effective Government for the New Century,” the authors present the newest ideas in contemporary public administration. It describes current trends in governance practice, proposes options for operating models, processes, and tools, and explores how governments try to respond to the most complex challenges of today.
The book’s authors, Rabi Aboukhakra and Michel Khouri, hold senior positions in the Abu Dhabi Government Strategy Department. Both have extensive experience in strategic planning in the public sector. The author of the foreword, Robin Butler, Baron Brockwell, previously served as Chief of Staff to five Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom.
