For a real gentleman, meeting a blonde is never for nothing—both literally and figuratively! The famous screenwriter and writer Anita Loos (1891–1981) has been convinced of this time and again from her own experience: as she admitted, she associated herself with the brunette Dorothy—the world-weary friend of the charming blonde Lorelei Lee.
An outstanding storyteller, Loos began publishing small stories from Lorelei’s life in “Harper’s Bazaar” in 1925, and thanks to their popularity the magazine’s circulation grew fourfold. The book “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” and its sequel “But Men Marry Brunettes” (1927) were a tremendous success, as evidenced by the Broadway musical version. And in 1953, a film appeared with the unforgettable Marilyn Monroe in the leading role.
