Beloved classics once again raise the problem of the “little man.”

Mikhail Bulgakov’s works share a common theme and, you could say, a single character from the 1920s. This is the collective unconscious, whose voice Bulgakov, as a columnist for metropolitan newspapers and magazines, was able to capture so sensitively. His work in journalism allowed the prose writer to see firsthand and assess the frightening results of the social experiment conducted by the Bolsheviks.
