The hero of the novel, Lorenz Smith, is a talented but not very lucky actor. He is a man far from politics—essentially, a typical ordinary person in his views. He gets pulled into a story where he has to do more than just play an outstanding politician of his time in such a way that even the closest people to the real person can’t tell the difference. Temporarily, of course—until the politician restores the health undermined by his kidnapping and the “elixir of truth” processing.
This role requires full immersion in the character, and Smith manages to do it so convincingly that he himself becomes captivated by the political ideas and way of thinking of his prototype. That radically changes his entire life and fate—and not only his.
