The main characters of the book are players—but not only in the usual sense. Their lives are tied to searching for luck; they take part in a big game with very high stakes: happiness, friendship, love. Even though at first glance their lives seem successful—Calli becomes an important player in the gambling business, and Merlin becomes a famous writer and moves to Hollywood—they don’t feel happy. Luck is an unreliable partner, and for its help it demands a high price. No one has managed to avoid the final payment.
