The historical novel “The Duelist” offers a fictional solution to a number of myths and legends from the life of one of the best-known adventurers, duellists, and card players of the first half of the 19th century: Fyodor Tolstoy—“the American.” In this work, which continues the adventurous novel “The Wild American,” the story focuses on the mature—and most dramatic—period of Tolstoy-the-American’s life, full of military adventures, card tricks and schemes, duels, and passions. “The Duelist” was awarded the literary prize of the magazine “Novy Mir” for 2019; in 2020 it entered the longlist of the “Yasnaya Polyana” literary contest.
