Description
“Dubrovsky” is a vivid example of narrative prose by Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin and one of the early works in which the Russian literary language takes shape. At its core is the story of a man who suffers from the arbitrariness of a well-off neighbor and an unfair court; the plot is based on a real legal case. At the same time, the conflict and the love line echo, to a great extent, the motives of Shakespeare’s tragedy “Romeo and Juliet.”

What genre should “Dubrovsky” be classified as? The question is still open: before us is either an unfinished novel or an almost complete novella. Why did Pushkin, having a nearly finished text in hand, set it aside and switch to “The History of Pugachev” and “The Captain’s Daughter”? Researchers still argue about this, while readers continue to follow with interest the adventures of a young, daring nobleman.
