This novel has two sharp plot lines. The events of the odd-numbered chapters take place during the revolution and the beginning of the civil war. The even-numbered chapters describe events of our days occurring against the backdrop of a takeover of the Chasovoy (that is, military) plant. What connects them is a shared setting: a large provincial governorate city in the center of Russia. In the novel, it is Perm. But with the same success, it could be Voronezh, Irkutsk, Vladivostok… A century separates the heroes—a young romantic lady and a smart, unscrupulous “new Russian.” Each of them follows their own path of adventures, trials, and transformations—their own segment of Russia’s history. Yet between them there is a strange connection: the heroes—and the reader—feel that the city’s space contains all times at once…
