The Ardís audio studio presents the novel by the English writer Jane Austen (1775–1817) “Sense and Sensibility.” Austen’s aesthetic stance is that of a staunch realist who bases her work on the principle of truthfulness and an uncompromising attitude toward falseness, contrived passions, and fabricated situations. “Sense and Sensibility” is a psychological novel—an witty and perceptive depiction of provincial society. With subtle irony, the author draws portraits of “county” girls dreaming of marriage and chasing after an inheritance, of respectable matrons, self-serving and selfish beauties. Refined phrases by J. Austen wrap around the characters like a whip; the author’s satirical pen is ruthless, but in this satire there is no bitterness or irritation.
