Never before had a foreign prince—not from the Rurikid dynasty—sat on the throne of Pskov. But in the year 1266, the Pskovites couldn’t find a worthy candidate in Rus. So they summoned the deposed Lithuanian prince Dovmont along with his retinue. And they weren’t mistaken. Many times the prince’s skill in warfare and his shrewd politics saved the city from enemies. Quite a number of invaders fell at the Pskov borders before Dovmont taught them that it wasn’t worth looking for prey in these lands. For many years of peace and prosperity in the northern region, the Lithuanian prince repaid his new homeland.
