The novel “Don Juan” (1944) was written by the Czech writer Josef Toman. The story of the life of Count Miguel de Mañara—dubbed by the people of Seville “Don Juan”—allows the author not only to depict 17th-century Spain, but also to voice his attitude toward modernity. At the moment of its appearance, the novel sounded like a protest against the fascist “new order” of aggressive wars and fanatical obscurantism.
