The book by the well-known historian Ivan Yegorovich Zabelin (1820–1908) is unique for both the scope of its material and the engaging nature of its presentation. It is devoted to the analysis of female identity and the position of women, including tsaritsas, in pre-Petrine times. The history of sovereigns’ brides and marriages is examined. The customs of the royal court, the way of life of Russian tsaritsas, their attire, receptions, and amusements are described.
