The second book in the “In the Guests of the Htony” cycle. A disturbing regional horror unfolds in an ancient Samara mansion— a place where behind every door there are mysteries, and in the corridors ghostly shadows stir.
The novel blends mysticism, a detective intrigue, everyday drama, and the story of the city. It has: a deal with the devil, the secrets of merchant Samara, and a cat (or not quite a cat…).
A separate storyline weaves together human fates: other people’s lives turn out to be no less puzzling than the house itself. The reader is promised a multi-layered plot and an intensifying sense of unease that won’t let go until the very last page.
Lera comes to her hometown, Samara, for her grandmother’s funeral. The communal apartment where she once spent her childhood holidays greets her with creaks, rustling sounds, and stubborn footsteps from upstairs… even though no one has lived there for a long time. While sorting through her grandmother’s things, Lera finds a pendant with a short warning: “Don’t wear it.”
Trying to unravel the terrifying city legends—and to sort out her own feelings—Lera gradually realizes that her grandmother was hiding something far more frightening than the crumbling walls. Day by day, Lera gets deeper into the atmosphere of the mansion, where the past rises to the surface, there are more and more secrets, and familiar logic stops working.
