The Irish writer and journalist Maeve Binchy (1940–2012) became famous far beyond Ireland. She wrote numerous short stories and more than a dozen novels; her books regularly became bestsellers and won prestigious international awards. In the 1970s, Binchy published three successful short story collections, but true fame came to her after her debut novel Light a Penny Candle (1982).

The novel Tara Road is among her most popular works. In 2005, it was adapted into a film starring Andie MacDowell and Olivia Williams. In Russia, the film was released under the title Love in Exchange.
