One March Saturday morning, the corpse of a neighbor fell into the laps of Lipa and Lusinda—friends who were staying in a house-phantom on Chistye Prudy. And it wasn’t just that! The poor fellow was wrapped head to toe in wires—one could almost expect it to explode.
The mass death of the residents gathered at the scene was prevented by the new neighbor, Pavel Dobrovolsky, who neutralized the blast wave. The period of extremes continued, gaining momentum. The number of victims grew in geometric progression. Mr. Paramonov’s couple was already sent to the next world, Aunt Verochka had nearly choked on gas. Next in line were the others.
Pavel suspects all the inhabitants of the phantom house—except, of course, Olympia, with whom he not only conducts the investigation, but also lights a romance.
