“Doctor Thern,” perhaps the most dramatic work by H. Rider Haggard. Its theme sounds especially relevant today: what can you sacrifice for money and a career? And can a deal made with your own conscience go without consequences?
“Doctor Thern” tells the story of a young doctor who becomes influenced by Stephen Strong. Strong advises the doctor to run for Parliament, promising good money for the election campaign and a paid salary—yet in return he asks for little: to support his political demands, namely raising the income tax, which he claims will increase pensions, as well as supporting a campaign against vaccination.
