The war has begun. Everything has been set in motion and shifted from its usual place. Some went to the front, while others evacuated. Everywhere and in every direction, people lost loved ones—dear friends. Grief didn’t spare even the family of Soviet engineer Berezov. On the way, when the Berezovs were evacuating from Leningrad, their only son, Seryozha, fell ill and died. Even before the war ended, the Berezovs took in three-year-old Natasha, who had been orphaned during the days of the Leningrad blockade. The story tells about how Natasha’s fate unfolded in her new family—what переживания (feelings and hardships) the girl had to experience and what the Berezovs went through in raising her, in the novella “Daughter” by M. Belakhova.
