The book includes stories and novellas whose plots are drawn mainly from the life of Pomors—people who have lived along the shores of the cold White Sea since ancient times. And the author of the book is himself a native Pomor: he was born on this land. His roots go back to old Novgorod settlers and ушкуйники who, a few centuries ago, came to these wild shores. The customs of the ancient Novgorodians, their centuries-old cultural traditions, firmly rooted across the White Sea expanses, on the sea’s open spaces amid the wonderfully beautiful northern nature, and the captivating seascapes of the sea—everything created not only a new type of strong people, the Pomors, but also a new kind of Russian culture: the culture of the White Sea Pomor region.
