“The Virtue of Selfishness” is a collection of essays by the American writer Ayn Rand, written together with Nathaniel Branden and first published back in 1964 in the United States.
At the center of the work is an analysis of ethics through the lens of Objectivist philosophy, and a defense of the concept of “rational self-interest” as the ethical foundation of a free capitalist society.
Many are shocked by this book—because the author argues that the development of an independent, fully formed person is possible only under capitalism. That is, in any situation a person is the creator of their own happiness, and they should not rely on help from the state.
Self-respect and responsibility toward oneself—these are the slogans used by the authors who reject altruism and believe only in rational selfishness.
