Alexander Galin’s novel inevitably brings to mind the symbolic route of Russian literature traced by Radishchev from Petersburg to Moscow—though the heroes here move in the opposite direction, from Moscow to Petersburg. In this narrative, much is written “the other way around,” and even the journey itself is not made in reality, but in a dream, for an almost anecdotal reason. Translated from musical slang into verbal language, the novel’s title (which sends the reader to the well-known “territories of the bodily lower stratum” from Mikhail Bakhtin’s books) determines the plot of this engaging, very funny, and in places sharply sad work, as well as the author’s intention—to decipher the secret route of today’s Russian life, which is being laid blindly, and which is likewise, as if, also happening in a dream and in genres and styles previously unknown.
