In this dystopian novel, which became a cult book among certain segments of American society, the author writes about a terrifying hypothetical future of America, split by racial conflicts and scorched by the fire of thermonuclear civil war.
The novel may be described as a utopia for racists and a dystopia for liberal democrats, Bolsheviks, and anarchists. Even then, the characterization of “utopia” applies to Macdonald’s novel only at the beginning, when it is explained (and this circumstance is repeatedly recalled throughout the novel) that “The Turner Diaries” is being presented to the reader by a future civilization in which racial purity is the ruling ideology. The events described in the novel, however, are the very process of this civilization’s formation: the struggle of the Organization (the name of the racist underground community) against the System.
