In this work, the author tells about the fate of several women from high society who, due to circumstances, end up in the jungles of a tropical island. What happens to a person when they are thrown out of ordinary life into a completely different environment? How will they fight for survival? And will they even try?
All these questions—and more—Shirley Conran answers.
She introduces us to women from high society in the city of Pittsburgh. Five women, five completely different destinies. Someone is happy in marriage; someone’s husband burns in the fire of his ambitions; someone is killed by her own family. It seems it will always be that way. But something irreversible happens in their lives, and they find themselves on an island where, on one side, there are warlike tribes engaged in cannibalism, and on the other, no less dangerous terrorists. The women have to survive in harsh conditions, and now all their life is governed by the motto: "Either you, or you’ll be the one." They must go through many trials in the course of which they learn trust and survival and come to know themselves. It turns out you can live your whole life and still consider yourself a proper housewife, a boring bookworm, an irritating busybody, a victim of injustice—or a victim of circumstances.
And only in a situation where life hangs by a thread—when there is no turning back—do we truly learn ourselves, our real face.
