The Sorrow of Satan
The novel is set in London in 1895. Satan walks among people in search of yet another toy he can play with, to show God that he can corrupt anyone. He wants to find someone worthy—someone who can resist temptation—but around there is unbelief, corruption, and bribery.
Geoffrey Tempest, a young, impoverished writer, can barely make ends meet, unsuccessfully trying to sell his novel. Once again, as he reflects on his desperate situation, he notices three letters on his desk. The first is from a friend in Australia, who became rich through gold mining; he tells Geoffrey that he is sending a friend who will help him get out of poverty. The second is a note from an attorney, describing in detail that he inherited a fortune from a deceased relative. The third is a letter of recommendation from Prince Lucho Rimanese, the “savior from poverty” his friend in Australia wrote about. Will Geoffrey be able to make the right choice, preserve his talent, and save his soul?..
The Devil’s Elixir
In this edition, the novel “The Elixirs of the Devil” is presented, dedicated to one of Hoffmann’s favorite themes: the destructive influence of the dark side of a person’s inner self. Moreover, the intrusion of evil into a person’s soul is determined both by hereditary causes and by the action of external, demonic, supernatural forces. The main character, the monk Medardus, by accident tastes a mysterious liquid from a crystal phial and thus becomes an involuntary bearer of evil. The narrative, told from his perspective, leads through the monastery passages and cells, and then into a colorful world—so that you can experience everything the monk went through in life: the dreadful, terrifying, insane, and even ridiculous ordeals…
Addressed to everyone who is drawn to the world of the mysterious and unusual.
Lucifer (Part 1)
The first part of the trilogy of tragedies by the Dutch playwright Joost van den Vondel, written in the 17th century. The play explores the themes of the fall and the struggle between good and evil through the image of Lucifer, the fallen angel who rises against God.
Vondel creates a profound psychological portrait of the characters, examining the nature of evil and the drive for freedom, as well as the consequences of rebellion against the divine order. Complex dialogues and poetic language make “Lucifer” not only an important work for studying Dutch literature, but also a universal exploration of human nature.
