After a world war that turned almost the entire Earth into a lifeless wasteland, there remained only pockets of hope and life. Small enclaves of people around the world wage a struggle against mutants in order to claim the right to be called the pinnacle of the food chain. Sergei was a veteran from the generation that still saw the real Sun, not its dim silhouette behind gray clouds—then he was about sixteen. Now he is thirty-six.
